 The Asian or Global Universality of Korean Culture and Kwangju(Gwangju) May Uprising

Good afternoon. Nice to meet you. First, thanks for my respectable writer-colleaques (poets & novelist etc.) coming a long way in these countries Vietnam, Burma(Myanmar), Palestine, and Iraq to taking part in The 10th Dialogue with World Writers & the 1st Workshop for Asian Literature. With our Korean writers I am very happy to present at this meeting. Now also I face you, I feel highly honored to talk with you who love Korea and think over the future of Asia & the world.
I am a poet and teacher in the korean Peninsula. The Korean Peninsular has grief caused by internal and external contradictions. This peninsular may have more painful factors than any other countries in Asian and Pacific are. Tomorrow morning, is the Mangwol-dong cemetery for May 18 victims that you will visit the very memorable place representing this reality? Of course, from June 15 in the 2000 the Korean Peninsula-South & North Korea has been coming a peace-mood, therefore many People do not spare any efforts for make /'/a Dream of Unification/'/ an actuality.
At any rate, I agree with you that the whole things of Asian and Pacific area are not tragic and painful. You must be proud that the great values of culture that Korea has preserved and accumulated through several thousands and tens of thousands years are still remain untouched. And I believe firmly that the whole of the world including Korea will be affluent and happy in the future when they magnify and reproduce the values of korean culture from now.
Since Kwangju May Uprising in the 1980 I have realized this new Asian or Oriental value and have placed my hope on it. Kwangju citizens uprising, equal to the French Revolution, was really enormously powerful. Kwangju citizens and conscientious people of Korea resisted and stood against the tyrannical military regime which oppressed democracy and killed innocent citizens for the taking helm of state affairs. At that time Kwangju citizens were "people who defeated death at the risk ones death
and acquired life at the cost of ones life."
In May 18 Uprising, Kwangju citizens were people who inherited the real spirit and culture from Asian traditional agricultural people and the activist who practised inherited common goodness(public goodness) like the farmers in the ideal agricultural society who planted rice with songs and cooperated with others.
Though they fought against military regime armed with newest weapons, Kwangju citizens never forfeited humanity, sharing mind and the spirit of cooperations. In Kwangju at that time there no bank robbed and prices fluctuated narrowly. We can find that Kwangju citizens had sharing minds and knew the economy of sharing at the time. Where was it from?
The power of sharing, the mind to share with others and to regard other/'/s life as own life, and the spirit to be a foundation of truth, peace, and democracy at the cost of life prevailed among Kwangju citizens as a miracle. I know that common goodness and spirit of cooperation were from Korean philosophy and Korean value based on the Korean spirit accumulated for a long time.
But now Korea faces another adversity. Above all, new-liberalism and the logic of the market economy are prevailing in the whole country. As the other counties of Asia, Korea is caught by IMF-aftereffect and under the influence of powerful multinational financial specialists.
In the case of Korea, the culture of sharing, the culture based on common goodness and cooperation, and the spirit of citizens solidarity, which Kwangju of May in 1980 had pursued, are threatened now. The number of the unemployed is growing fast and the middle classes fell down. Capitalistic economy is in great peril.
I emphasize that to overcome the economical, social, and cultural crisis of the world, we must recover the Korean values and reproduce them. As history reveals, common goodness and agricultural cooperation spirits played an important part in Korean culture. As Korean history shows, Dangun, the first founder of Korean Peninsular suggested thehumanitarian ideal, "Hongik" meaning devotion to the welfare of mankind, to his people.
The Korean virtue of common goodness is somewhat different from the culture of Western nomadic tribes, but similar to the Asian culture. From ancient times, Korea is the region where these religions, thoughts, cultures co-exist : Ancestor worship regarding human as lord of creation ; Totemism worshiping animals of things like the Indian/'/s cult of nature ; Heaven ; Ecological and an environment idea ; Shamanism, the basis of primitive religion to believe the contacts with gods and spirits ; Buddhism ; Confucianism ; Dong-hak idea that believed human beings were heaven ; Mi-ruck religion that the people would meet the new ideal world ; Wonbulgyo, Korean people/'/s religion placing great emphasis on the harmony material and spirit ; the culture of benevolence and love showing mercy ; and the culture to share and live together.
Korean Peninsular has been supported by the very religions, and cultures. And I believe these Korean cultures and thoughts are firmly related with those of other countries in the world.
In this reason I expect these cultures and thoughts make progress to the 21st century. We hope our 21st century will be the happy world where people will less own, and more share with others, not the world where people having more come to live better and better. Question one:
 Living as a writer?
I have always tried to live as an ordinary person not as a writer, or as the writer suppose to live in the pubic image.
In my country the writer is forced to hold a mission over his shoulders: his nation destiny and its longing to get read of occupation. He is supposed to be the tongue of his people. This is a great honor from one side, and a great prison from the other. Between honor and the prison the writer is struggling.
For example, if there is a freedom demonstration in the street and the writer is seeing it from his window what shall he do? Is he supposed to continue writing his novel, or shall he turn off his computer and run down to the street to join the demonstrators?
If he continues writing forgetting the people in the street the freedom cause will loose. And if he went down to share the struggle his writing will the looser.
And this is the daily seen in my country. And you have to take a decision.

 Question two:
Finding books is the most difficult thing for me as a writer.
There are many check points, many obstacles, for the book to reach my hands. The occupation force in standing there on the road.
When the allowed books reaches me in the end their price will tripled at least. I have no many to buy them.
There are no public libraries to depend on. The main public library in my city, Ramallah, have only twenty thousands titles on its shelves only. Half of them are rubbish.
Books are our main pain.

Question three:

Asia for me is the land of variety. It is not like Europe.
Variety is gift indeed. But it needs bridges. There are not many bridges in Asia. In the remote past there was much bridges than now, and they were much stronger. We have to rebuild them, and to build new ones.

I am not coming to contact Asian writers first of all but to contact Korea.

 I am interested in humanity and liberation from suppression of justice, freedom rights, and economic equity.

2. In your country, what it means that you live as a writer?
´ç½ÅÀÇ ³ª¶ó¿¡¼­ ÀÛ°¡·Î¼­ »ê´Ù´Â °ÍÀº ¹«½¼ ÀǹÌÀΰ¡?

 A writer is highly regarded by readers in Burma. I think Burma may be the only country where there is Writer/'/s month and day. It is 9th Burmese calendar month (November and December). During this period, people donate cash to local literary interest group, which makes a decision on invitation of writers. Usually 3 or 4 distinguished writers are invited. Each writer gives a talk at night about 40 to 60 minutes on literature or culture or social opinion on current affairs which is to be followed by discussion. Usually the writers hold discussion with a small group of
local young writers and poets until 3:00 or 4:00 AM next morning.
 But on the other hand, the military junta does not want to give free hand to writers so they set up censor office. Burma is the one of the top censor country in the world.

 The most difficult problem for me is to allot some time to write a literary piece since most of my time is occupied with project, related to policy formulation and politics.
Sometimes I would like to devote all my time to write a novel.

 General impression in the west is that Asians are docile. We need to be aggressive in dealing with dictators and human rights abuses in Asia and other regions. This rogram will enhance understanding between people living under different systems and regions and thus promote peace through intellectuals.
