2004년 7월 1일 5.18국립묘지, 고 김남주 선생 묘소 앞에서, 한국작가 50여명, 베트남 작가 15명, 이라크 작가 1명, 팔레스타인 작가 1명, 몽골 작가 10명이 모여, 아시아 평화선언을 했습니다.

아시아 작가 평화선언


사랑과 정의, 평화의 연대를 위하여

아시아의 역사는 고통스러웠다. 그리고 여전히 대부분의 나라에서 제국주의 침탈, 전쟁, 종교간 지역간 계층간 분쟁, 독재 정치의 횡포는 끝나지 않았다. 우리 아시아 작가들은 서로의 슬픔과 울분을 깊이 이해하고 공명한다. 아시아 민중들은 학살당하기 위해 태어나지 않았다. 우리는 지배받고 길들여지며, 열등 종족으로 영원히 서구를 추종하기 위해 존재하는 게 아니다. 자신의 땅에서 버림받고 자원과 노동을 착취당하는 노예의 삶을 우리는 더 이상 견딜 수 없다. 우리 아시아 작가들은 오직 하나의 염원으로 이 자리에 서 있다. 미래는 달라야만 한다. 인류의 모든 탐욕과 갈등의 대가를 대신 치르는, 아시아의 그릇된 운명을 우리는 이제 거부한다!

심장에서 솟구치는 우리의 분노는 세상을 태우고도 남을 것이다. 우리가 흘린 눈물로 지구에 또 한 번 대홍수를 일으킬 수도 있을 것이다. 그러나 우리는 그러기를 원하지 않는다. 왜냐하면 세계사의 피해자였던 우리는, 가해가 얼마나 나쁜지 너무나 잘 알기 때문이다. 전쟁을 겪었기 때문에 우리는 전쟁만큼은 일어나서는 안 된다는 것을, 폭력에 시달렸기 때문에 우리는 폭력이 인간성을 말살시킨다는 사실을 뼈저리게 안다. 우리가 원하는 것은 증오와 보복을 뛰어넘는 새로운 역사, 아시아를 비롯한 인류 전체의 구원이다.

24년 전 이 땅, 광주에서 군부 독재에 항거하던 시민들이 무참하게 살해당할 때 세계는 무엇을 하였던가? 지난 세기 인류의 양심을 시험한 베트남전 당시, 우리는 전쟁광들의 잔인하고 비인간적인 도박에 맞서 어떤 힘이 되어 주었던가? 팔레스타인과 이라크에서 수많은 민간인들이 아파치 헬기와 탱크에 살해당하고 있는 지금, 60억에 달하는 인간들은 도대체 무엇을 하고 있는가? 유목적 사유를 바탕으로 한 초원에서 소리없이, 그러면서도 인류의 새로운 삶에 보탬이 될 희망의 약속을 만들어가는 동안, 우리는 얼마나 관심을 기울였던가?버마를 비롯한 또다른 많은 나라에서 감시와 압제 아래 힘없는 백성들이 조용히 죽어가는 동안, 우리는 무엇을 하고 있었단 말인가?

우리가 지칭하는 폭력은 무력 행사만이 아니다. 무력이 행사되도록 방관하는 무관심과 이기주의도 폭력이다. 다른 지역, 타인들에게 자행되는 폭력을 용납하면 세상이 점점 폭력으로 넘쳐, 언젠가는 우리가 살고 있는 지금 여기로 폭력이 돌아오지 않을 수 없기 때문이다.

어차피 인간의 현실은 약육강식일 수밖에 없다는 체념이 폭력을 배양한다. 인간은 동물이 아니며, 국가와 집단과 개인들끼리 잡아먹고 잡아먹히는 지금의 현실을 인간이라면 용인해서는 안 된다. 현실이 이토록 타락한 책임은 누구보다 먼저 인류의 윤리와 심성에 대해 고민해야 할 작가들에게 있다. 우리 아시아 작가들은 비통하게 반성하며, 문학으로써 사회와 역사를 고양시키는 숭고한 임무를 지고자 한다. 전쟁과 폭력을 종식시키려면 지역과 인종, 국적을 뛰어넘는 공감과 의지가 필요하고, 그것을 가능하게 하는 것이 문화의 교류요 문화를 통한 상호 이해다.

우리 아시아 작가들은 정신의 힘으로 또 감동의 방식으로, 아시아에 정의와 사랑, 평화의 연대를 구축해나가기 위해 최선을 다할 것이다. 이것이 아시아가 해방되고 동시에 인류에게 새로운 미래가 열리는 가장 빠른 길이며, 어쩌면 유일한 길이라고 우리는 믿는다. 아시아의 짐은 아프고도 무겁다. 모든 대륙과 바다에서 통곡과 절규가 그치는 그 날까지, 우리 아시아 작가들은 인간의 인간다움을 고수할 것임을 엄숙히 선언한다.

제1회 아시아 청년작가 워크숍에 참가한 이라크, 팔레스타인, 베트남, 몽골, 한국 등 5개국 작가 40여명은 1일 오전 광주 국립 5.18 묘지 김남주 시인의 묘 앞에서 평화선언문을 발표, "아시아가 해방되고 인류에게 새로운 미래가 열릴 수 있도록 작가들이 앞장서 /'/인간다움/'/을 지켜가겠다"고 밝혔습니다.
작가들은 "아시아 민중들은 학살당하기 위해 태어난 것도 아니고 서구를 추종하기 위해 존재하는 것도 아니다"며 "아시아의 그릇된 운명을 거부하고 새로운 역사를 만들어 가겠다"고 말했다.
이들은 이를 위해 2년에 1번 아시아 작가들의 연대와 교류를 모색하는 작가대회를 열고 상설 사이트를 개설, 인터넷을 통한 상시적 교류를 시도하며 아시아인들을 위한 문학도서관을 짓되 한국에서 시범사업을 실시하기로 합의했다.
이들은 또 이라크 전쟁과 관련, "전쟁으로 희생된 이라크인들과 김선일씨의 죽 음을 애도하는 마음으로 미국의 침략전쟁을 반대하며 파견된 외국군은 철수하고 한 국을 비롯한 모든 나라의 추가 파병은 중단돼야 한다"고 주장했다.
하미드 무사(48) 이라크 문인협회장은 "이라크인들과 같은 방법으로 폭력집단에 의해 희생된 김선일씨를 피로 맺어진 형제로 생각한다"며 "김선일씨와 5.18 묘지에 묻힌 사람들을 마음속에 담고 돌아가겠다"고 말했다.
평화선언에 앞서 참가자들은 5.18 신묘역과 구묘역에 차례로 들러 헌화, 분향했으며 워크숍은 부산, 제주 등에서 8일까지 계속된다.

the solidarity of love, justice and peace through the power of art
--A Declaration of Peace by Asian Writers

We have suffered so much for a long time here in Asia. Yet this sad history is not over, and relentless imperialist pillages, cruel wars, harsh dictatorship, and religious, social and class conflicts are still pervasive in most Asian countries.

We, Asian writers, deeply understand and sympathize with the grief and indignation among us in Asia. Asian people are not born to be maltreated or massacred. We are not here to be dominated, or tamed by the colonialism. We cannot stand the state of slavery in which we are deprived of all our resources and labor and dispossessed of our own land any more. We are all here with one hope in our mind. Our future should be different. We do reject and boycott our false destiny fabricated to serve the greed and conflicts which have nothing to do with us. We are all here expecting the new future.

The blaze of rage soaring from our heart is intense enough to burn down the whole world and tears from our eyes could sweep out the whole world once more. But that is far from what we really want. We have suffered enough to know better than to torture others. And we all deeply know that there should not be any more wars in the world. Because we have been its victims all the time, we all know how cruel violence can be, destroying all our humanity and dignity. All we want is to build new Asia and to launch new history overcoming hatred and revenge.

What did the world do 24 years ago when innocent citizen, who opposed against military dictatorship, were slaughtered in Gwangju, Korea? What did we do against the cruel and greedy imperialist war in Vietnam which was the test of our conscience in the 20th century? What did we do when people were being killed silently under the oppression and surveillance in Burma and many other countries? What do we do now when a lot of people are murdered by apache attack helicopters and tanks in Palestine and Iraq? How much interests did we take while they were making a promise of hope based on the thought of nomade, which makes new way of life of humankind more affluently, in a grass-land?


Military power or force is not the only violence. Indifference and egoism that turn blind eyes to violent acts are another forms of violence. If we ignore violence toward other people in other places, that violence is bound to keep spreading until nobody can escape from it.

There exists a very dangerous way of thinking that we are all living in a jungle subject to the law of the survival of the fittest. where the weaker becomes the prey of the stronger. Such a defeatism is the best ground for violence to thrive on. We are not animals but human beings. So we should not accept current state of affairs where nations, groups, or individuals try to prey on each other. No exploitation of people can be excused under any circumstances. Writers, who have to agonize over humanity and morality, feel sorry not to be able to prevent current degenerated state of affairs. We, Asian writers, hereby assume the responsibility to inspire our society and history through literature. To end war and violence, we need compassions and will that go beyond regional boundaries, race, and nationality. Cultural exchange and mutual understanding alone can make it happen.

We are all committed to achieving and building the solidarity of love, justice and peace through the power of art. We believe that this is the fastest and perhaps the only way to free Asia and at the same time open a new history of mankind. The burden Asia has to bear is heavy and painful. We, Asian writers, hereby declare that we will do our best to protect humanity until all continents and oceans are free from cry and lamentation.
